Began well and had friendly lawyer. Deal to buy property was not as good as I'd hoped for but what really upset me were the charges. I paid 26.50 for every email. It's something to be aware of. Documents were sometimes send twice or three times, for no good reason (or poor communication at their end). It all added up. And they also have a high fee for paying stamp duty.
I used the HMRC calculator as recommended by the HMRC helpline and was prepared to do it myself as my money was running low. Lawyer told me that this was a rough tool. It required expertise. When I was invoiced and I saw their form, I found they had used the exact same calculator, and just filled in names and addresses (not all correctly). I believe they charged well over 500 for that.
I think they then charged me again. Eventually, their costs and the attitude of the main lawyer meant I had to find another firm. This is all true so not defamatory. The response below is misleading. It's reasonable on the surface but no one rang and no one was interested in dealing with my issues. As in, 'they are perfect, don't send me three copies of the same document or ask several times to confirm the same thing, or email someone else to pass on information I had already passed on'.
I was then informed that if I didn't pay for their mistakes and failure to submit a document, they will keep my file and won't transfer it to my new solicitor to complete. To the above add that they sent the final bill with the wrong name (second time), duplicated work, and failed to submit the right forms to the Stamp duty office or HMRC (no heading so can't tell). not of satisfactory quality. cost to me for no result: about 1000.
I kept copies so knew I had sent them correct ones to them, checked three times by two people. Anyway, I shall endeavour to complete the work myself. Many people do. Will phone the office to ask how. cost: 0 pence.

I would avoid at all costs! Shocking service from start to finish. We had to continually chase for answers due to a lack of communication and felt like we were not listened to. Costs were higher than expected plus there always seemed a constant mix up with invoices, we had to always chase for a break down of costs. Still waiting for a declaration of trust requested from January 2020 and still waiting to receive this to date!
Now to add insult to injury we were chased today for a bill that we had already paid, I have no faith they actually know what they are doing! Only interested in the money, poor all round.

We were quoted around 1400 in total fees and at every step we encountered more and more hidden fees despite birketts 'transparent fees' our end total was 2700 which was way more than even the more expensive quotes we got to begin with from other companies. They got the job done, for a hefty price and in their own time. Communication was poor, often our house developers would say 'have your solicitors not advised you of this?
We told them last week to pass info on to you'. Would not recommend using, any questioning we had of fees was addressed with a very confusing explanation written in a typical solicitors fashion so know one knows what they are talking about! On completion we were told we may receive a refund if we've paid too much, but instead got another 500 bill we were not told about until only days before moving and when we questioned it, it was clear that we either pay, or we don't complete and majority of replies were very blunt and would finish with 'we look forward to your reply and full payment' or just simple replies to other queries that I just found rude. Very poor and disappointing.
