Acting for British Transport Police at the London Bombings Inquests and advising the force in connection with the Leveson Inquiry. BTP retained us for the Manchester Arena Inquiry also. Providing one of the first drafts of the Scrap Metal Dealers bill. Since then we have been advising various industry parties, including the BMRA and insurers, on the meaning and effect of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Writing A Practical Guide to Vicarious Liability (2018) and A Practical Guide to the Scrap Metal Dealers' Act 2013 (2019).

Our areas of expertise are complementary and enable us to examine a dispute or issue from a number of standpoints. The 2022 annual edition of Rail Professional published her article on the data protection implications of CCTV on the railway. Westlaw invited her to submit an extended article on the 2013 Act to Westlaw Insight, an online encyclopedia of UK law.
We advise and represent the Prison Governors Association, the Police Superintendents' Association and their members in disputes with the Secretary of State for Justice, the Police and Crime Commissioners, and their Chief Constables. Many of our cases concern discrimination. Several police staff associations have instructed us in a number of cases concerning the Government's reform of public service pensions, including judicial review proceedings arising out of its unlawful consultation on pension reform following the Court of Appeal's decision in McCloud and Sargeant.
Many of our cases concern discrimination, the legality of stops and searches, arrests, search warrants, detention and prosecutions. We advise on disclosure and barring service checks, and the removal of information held on the Police National Computer. A police force that had decided to carry firearms when patrolling came to Mariel for advice on the mechanics of doing so.
Mariel has been representing interested persons at inquests since 1991. We acted for British Transport Police at the London Bombings Inquests and advised the force in connection with the Leveson Inquiry. More recently, Mariel has been retained on the Manchester Arena Inquiry.
